Family holiday bliss in KZN

FAMILY HOLIDAY BLISS IN KZN

My family and I have just returned from a wonderful holiday in KZN. After flying to Durban we picked up our Toyota Avanza rental and started our journey.

A short detour through the beautiful midlands led us to the museum at the Nelson Mandela capture site and the spectacular memorial. The Cavern Berg Resort is a wonderful family resort in the Drakensberg at which we spent five memorable days. Every day we joined the organised walks into the surrounding hills. The highlights were a walk up Camel’s Hump, Tugela Gorge and to Lone Rock to see Bushman paintings.

Dundee was next to explore the battlefields of Blood River, Isandlwano and Rourke’s drift. Our superb guide for the day was Johan Hamman and for all four of us this was a phenomenal experience.

On the way to Hluhluwe we visited the museum complex at Umgungundlovu (Dingaan’s base for nine years)…..what a surprise! We got a superb insight into Zulu culture and visited a recreated Umgungundlovu, as well as the site of Piet Retief and his men’s murder and gravesite. Hilltop camp at Hluhluwe and the game viewing experiences were spectacular.
On the drive to our rental apartment in La Lucia we stopped off at St Lucia for a cruise up the estuary. From our base in La Lucia we explored the Durban area.

Some highlights: Dan and I surfing at North beach, hiring bikes and cycling down the beautiful promenade, delicious bunny chow from Happy Chappy and Ushaka Marine World!

Overall a wonderful two weeks of rest and creating lasting family memories….with the unexpected benefit of a much better understanding of our beautiful countries’ fractured past and a better perspective of where I fit in!
