SURGERY FOR VALGUS KNEE: DISTAL FEMORAL OSTEOTOMY

First few weeks at home

It is very important to understand that your bone must heal in the area where the bone wedge was inserted. The bone will take at least 8-12 weeks to fuse and during this period it is very important that you should protect your leg.

You can “toe-touch”, but may not bear weight on the operated leg and you must use both crutches at all times. Do not move around too much and do not drive at all for the 1st 4-6 weeks. Before your discharge from the hospital the physiotherapist will show you how to walk and protect your leg.

Your follow-up consultation will be approximately 2 weeks after the operation. We will take X-rays of the leg only at your 6 week follow-up. If the bone healing is satisfactory, we will allow you to start carrying progressively more weight on the leg.
