2nd Combined Congress of SA Knee Society and Belgian Knee Society, Table Bay Hotel, 1st and 2nd November 2015

I had the pleasure of attending this meeting over the past weekend. Our Belgian colleagues are a great bunch of knee surgeons: friendly, knowledgeable, humble and with a shared sense of humour. It was therefore a great two days of sharing ideas and listening to presentations by world experts in their field.
I had the honour of co-chairing a session on the patella instability (knee cap dislocation) with a Belgian colleague, Dr Chris Mertens. It was good to listen again to my mentor, Dr Spike Erasmus, sharing his philosophy of surgical treatment of patella instability. Dr Peter Verdonk from Antwerp presented a very interesting paper on computer 3D modelling of the trochlea, the groove that the patella runs in over the front of the knee femur.
Overall a few new things relating to knee surgery learnt over the two days and some seeds planted in my mind for future research.
Thanks must go to the organising committee (Dr Hans van der Bracht, Dr Ponky Firer, Dr Hayden Hobbs, Dr Bart Stuyts and Dr Carl Brabants) as well as the scientific committee of Dr Hayden Hobbs and Dr Peter Verdonk. I look forward to the next meeting between our two societies!
