PATELLA INSTABILITY SURGERY
Dangers of a patella dislocation
- Damage to joint surfaces: With every patella dislocation episode there is a risk of damaging the joint surface under the patella or in the trochlea. This can ultimately lead to the development of patellofemoral arthritis which is very difficult to treat.
- Recurrent subluxations or dislocation: You may develop the ability to prevent a subluxation (excessive lateral movement of patella) from going further on to a complete dislocation. These episodes will result in you being anxious about the patella dislocating. Should your patella recurrently dislocate you will most likely not have the confidence to play sports. In severe cases though the patella can dislocate during activities of daily living.
