You will be admitted to the hospital on the day of the operation. We aim to decrease the length of your hospital stay as much as possible so as to decrease the risk of infection.

On your admission to the ward, the nursing staff will prepare you for theatre. Your leg will be cleaned and draped in a clean sheet. An adult diaper will be fitted. This is because we do not want to insert a urinary catheter (which increases infection risk). The diaper will be removed as soon as you can get up to go to the bathroom later on the same day after the operation.

The operation is either performed by means of a spinal or a general anaesthetic.

The surgical operating time for a single TKR is approximately 60-80 minutes while for a double TKR it is approximately 120-160 minutes.
