TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT

Why do I need a knee replacement?

A knee replacement can be considered when your knee joint is damaged resulting in pain and loss of function and after other treatment modalities have not been successful. There are various causes for the damage of the joint surface, the most common being osteoarthritis.

At the time of your consultation with me I will discuss the various possible treatment options for your knee. The right stage to consider having a replacement is when the discomfort and functional limitations impact negatively on your quality of life. You are in the best position to judge this for yourself.

Many patients are concerned that they may be too old for a knee replacement operation. You are never “too old” or “too young”. If a knee replacement is the only sensible surgical solution to your knee ailment then it is a case of weighing up the risks of the surgery and possible complications against the prospect of a successful knee replacement. The youngest patient I have performed a knee replacement for to date was 36 years old and the oldest was 96 years old.
